Living in a "media society" the visual gain more importance every day.  Visual anthropology, which cannot be reduced to ethnographic film, offers an important range of activities, which are basic for research in general. As a multidisciplinary subject Visual Anthropology provides basic theoretical and methodological concepts, which find application in many new anthropological sub-disciplines as Anthropology of Space, Anthropology of the Senses, Anthropology of Communication etc. The workshop will give an insight of the state of the art

of the visual  dimension in anthropology. Encompassing the use of photography, film, video and multimedia in anthropology, the scope of this session is to provide an overview of different contemporary trends in visual anthropology. Critical approaches and thoughts about the visual will be encouraged and the socio-ethical dimension challenging the basic routinization of anthropology discussed.
