In coming years the educational structure of universities in the countries of the European Union will become increasingly integrated. The 1999 Bologna Resolutions of the Ministers of Education designate the formation within the next ten years of a European Higher Education Area. This requires that member countries translate certain rulings into policy: the introduction of BA/MA degrees, of the ECTS credit system, of easy readable and comparable degrees, and of a diploma supplement that makes the achievements of students transparent. In addition, various measures will enhance the mobility of students and teachers, researchers and administrative staff, and in the spirit of Europeanisation should considerably facilitate inter-institutional co-operation. Several countries have already begun this process, while in others such initiatives are still lacking. At this roundtable, colleagues will describe the situation at their universities and in their countries, and afterwards there will be the opportunity for discussion. Since the current level of development is still very varied, this gives us the possibility of co-ordinating our activities with each other. It will be useful if we now exchange views about what possibilities these changes open for us. Beyond this, we should form a network through which, during the following years, we can continue an exchange on a Europe-wide level about the consequences of the Bologna Resolutions for social anthropology at our universities.
