Colloquium – Colonial Practices and their Amnesia (8 April : La Fémis / 9 April : EHESS)

We have the pleasure to announce you the upcoming session in a series of three colloquia titled “Filmic Forms and Practices of Autochthonous Struggles.”

These colloquia (Paris, February 27–28, April 8–9, May 2–3) – bringing together filmmakers, activists, and researchers in film studies and social sciences – propose a first cartography of filmic forms and practices of autochthonous struggles, particularly in North America and the Pacific region. The colloquia are organized under the auspices of the research project "For a Global Study of Filmic Practices within Autochthonous Struggles," hosted at La Fémis and funded by PSL Research University’s Global Studies initiative.

Please find attached (or at this link) the general program and below the program for the upcoming colloquium.

With best wishes,

Nicole Brenez, Jonathan Larcher, Alo Paistik, Caroline San Martin

Nicole Brenez, Jonathan Larcher, Alo Paistik, Caroline San Martin

Vapor Trail (Clark), John Gianvito, 2010

The collective amnesia surrounding the colonial history of the Philippines forms the starting block for this colloquium. The documentary works produced by John Gianvito and the engagement of the activist Myrla Baldonado for the rights of the victims of environmental pollution at the US military bases of Clark and Subic in the Philippines are at the heart of the first day. The second focuses on Okinawa, Micronesia, Samoa, and Australia, as well as on the colonial and neo-colonial practices exercised in the Pacific region in the 20th century – a space marked by late independence movements, the subsistence of various protectorate regimes, and the deep presence of multinational companies and Western armed forces. These two days attempt to map and establish a chronology of filmic practices documenting the Australian, American, and Japanese colonial and military heritage in the Pacific region, as well as the resistance movements that have formed since World War II.
