Ethnocineca - International Documentary Film Festival Vienna

Dear friends and colleagues

This is a reminder for the Call for Films for the 14th Ethnocineca - International Documentary Film Festival Vienna. From May 7th - 13th, 2020 the 7 days filmfestival showcases approx 50 films in two cinemas in Vienna. A variety of films of any lengh and topic as well as traditional and innovative productions make up the width and depth of the festival. With a rich side programme including a keynote lecture, an opening ceremony, a master class, a roundtable discussion, an Award Ceremony and many filmtalks we invite everyone to engage with Visual Anthropology and documentary films. For further information on the programme and all award schemes, please visit www.ethnocineca.at .

We specifically invite submissions for the EVA – Excellence in Visual Anthropology Award that promots innovative ethnographic films and anthropological documentaries. The EVA competition reflects the diversity of ethnographic film and honors outstanding achievements and innovative works that contribute to a progressive understanding of Visual Anthropology. Films, which have been made within scientific research as well as independently produced films will be accepted. Traditional and experimental methods and approaches are equally welcome, as long as they correspond to anthropological principles in perspective and style. Prize money: EUR 1.000.-
• Innovative films in the field of Visual Anthropology
• Length: min. 45 minutes

This year’s festival theme ‘B R E A T H E' is devoted to poetic and experimental approaches of sensory documentary filmmaking and sets a focus on those dimensions of world events that are difficult to approach solely by the means of language. Emphasising a cinema of the senses, we thus immerse ourselves in the realities of the lives of protagonists persistent in their quest for change. Whether personal destinies, political upheavals, moral or social controversies, religious conflicts or the climate crisis, in these turbulent times, faced with uncertainties and many open questions for the future, we address the beauty and goodness between the lines of cinematic narratives.
