AudioVisual & Media Anthropology and the Documentary Arts

Dear Colleagues

we have a call for applications for our next in-take (fall 2023) and would
appreciate if you could forward this e-mail via your departments' mailing
lists or spread the word to your students and other people who might be
interested in advanced training in AudioVisual & Media Anthropology and the
Documentary Arts.

Master Program "Visual Anthropology, Media and Documentary Practices" |
University of Mnster
Homepage: www.wwu-weiterbildung.de/anthropology
The application period for the new master course starting in autumn 2023 is
open! Deadline: 31.03.2023

Participants of the course graduate by producing media project (film, or
photography, web-documentary, podcast, Vlog, installation etc) and they write
up a shortened MA thesis (15-20.000 words) that is closely related to their
media project. Thesis & Media Project count 50% each into the final assessment
of the graduation project.
The program offers all classes (modules 1-7, approx. 50 days) as blocks of
courses and participants need not be based permanently in Mnster or Germany
for that matter. However, international students can apply for a student visa
and stay in Mnster or elsewhere in germany or the EU. In addition to the
seven in-house block courses students participate five further online-courses
(tutorials) to follow up the in-house classes. Each of these five video
conference tutorials consists of seven sessions (x2 hours) and further
learnweb interaction and assignments. Thereby, students experience continuity
and a sustainable study environment also between the in-house classes.

In todays globalized world, where media representations shape social and
political spheres, a critical understanding of media and (audio-)visual
culture is crucial. Media studies, rooted in social anthropology, offers an
in-depth approach to analyzing the complex connections between media, culture
and society. The Master Program "Visual Anthropology, Media and Documentary
Practices" trains students in theory and practice in the areas of visual
anthropology, the documentary arts (film/photography/installation/&multimodal
approaches), the study of media culture and media anthropology.
