SHORT COURSE: INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY

Drawing on the vast field of Anthropological research we aim to explore the ambigious relationship between anthropology and film. This begins with questions concerning the nature of visual anthropology, and what kinds of films anthropologists might produce and why? What does it mean to claim to represent reality? What is the relationship between ethnographic and fictional film making? What does it mean to depict other people in our films and images, and is there an ethical responsibility to the people a filmmaker chooses to represent? We will also explore how swift advancements in technology have altered the course of anthropological film making, and explore whether this has enable anyone to become an anthropologist.
The short course will introduce you to a diverse range of viewpoints within the fields of anthropological investigation, including:
- Visual Anthropology
- Digital Anthropology
- The Anthropology of Film & Media
These different approaches will be drawn into conversation with documentary, Virtual Reality, and other forms of film making.
