Investigations and Appropriations in the Ethnographic and Documentary Film Course Tutor: Helen de Witt Dates: Oct 29 — Dec 17
This short course will investigate strategies of exploration and representation of the physical world, the imaginary realm and the transient experience of human life through experimental, ethnographic and documentary film. From the earliest reels of the Lumiere Bros, cinema has sought to capture and, on occasion, provoke a human reaction to the environment. Sometimes naively observational and at others deliberately interventionist, filmmakers have provided vivid interpretations of the world and its people through numerous visual strategies from cinema verite to rich experimentations in the creation of self-image.
The course will combine introductory lectures, screenings and group discussions. Sessions are focused on filmmakers as varied as: Margaret Mead, Frederick Wiseman, Agnes Varda, Ousmane Sembene, Yance Ford and the Otolith Group; and are divided into themes such as: Early Ethnographic Experiments, African Heritages, and Migrating Bodies
The course is led by esteemed critic, lecturer and curator Helen de Witt. She is a current programmer of London Film Festival’s Experimenta section, past festivals producer for BFI Flare, and was also Head of Cinemas at BFI Southbank until recently, alongside independently curated projects for venues around the world. She has lectured at universities including: Central St Martins, University of the Arts London, NFTS, University of Westminster and Birkbeck, as well as galleries like the Tate and the Serpentine, and was Vice Chair of LUX and chair of Four Corners, alongside countless other experiences.
The course takes place on Monday evenings from 7-9pm from October 29th, the cost is £150.
