Dear Vaneasa members,

Vizantrop, engaged ethnographic film festival in Serbia, is pleased to announce the opening submissions for the second edition of festival. The Festival will be held in the city of Belgrade, from May 20th - 24th 2020 and organized by collective “Vizantrop” from Belgrade.

For more information about the festival and open call, visit our website: https://antropviz.wixsite.com/vizantropfest and FB page: https://www.facebook.com/vizantrop/

Deadline for sending the movies: 1th of April

The Mission of the Festival is to encourage research and creative approaches to engaged ethnographic film, to educate audience about ways to perceive and accept the diversity of local cultural traditions and to point out the importance of cultural specificities and the importance of preserving cultural heritage. We want to broaden the voice of fighters, activists and associations that philanthropically want to make the world a safer place than it is.

Anthropologists are increasingly recognizing the need to expand their methodology and analytical expression. Traditional academic representations in the form of written articles or monographies are distinguished by their ability to provide insight into cultural practices, norms, rules and institutions that govern people’s lives. However, in order to fully grasp the complexity of social life, anthropology requires alternative academic approaches that enable researchers to explore the role of perception, imagination and emotions in human interaction. New social media and audiovisual technologies offer unique opportunities for the activation of almost all human senses and stimulation of imaginative capacities. Public institutions, (non)governmental organizations and academia are increasingly demanding audiovisual methods that can facilitate transcultural analysis and dialogue.

Submissions are free and open for films with innovative and analytical approach to cultures and societies. Authors can submit their films for any length of time and not older than 4 years for the following categories:

-

Community and Equality (competition program) - films about communities in general; films about the diverse forms of human cultures; films about alternative economies of social groups, political transformations and movements around the world films about engagement of researchers and their teams in helping endangered and marginalized communities overcome problems ; autoethnographic films and all kind of experimental ethnographic forms who are questioning human and their sensorical perception in order to achieve better understanding of humans

-

Intangible cultural heritage (informative program) - films in the domain of intangible cultural heritage that seek to represent and preserve various customs, cultural expressions and practices, as well as their transformations in contemporary times.

-

Ecology and social movements (informative program) - films produced by worldwide ecological activists or filmmakers/social researches who followed people riots and social movements who defended endangering nature. We are seeking for movies or visual essays who are using social intervention as a method by ‘revealing the hidden’ ; making explicit the voices and concerns of people who are usually ‘invisible’ and at risk of threats from state structures and police

-

Student film (competition program) - films produced by students as

young authors at their universities; films from visual anthropology workshops all around the globe

PRIZES FOR BEST FILMS - 2 COMPETITION PROGRAMS

Prize for the competition program “Community and Equality” implies paid transportation and accommodation during "The School of Visual Anthropology 2021" which will take place in Belgrade (Serbia) in summer 2021. Prize for the competition program “Student film” implies free participation and accommodation for a thirten day ethnographic film workshop "The School of Visual Anthropology 2021" which will take place in Belgrade (Serbia) in summer 2021.

We want the festival to encourage researchers, professors and future researchers to apply the methodology of visual anthropology with the aim of preserving human-perpetuated communities throughout the world, but also those communities that need new energy to overcome all social and economic problems. For us, the film is a tool of transcultural communication that can influence the social intervention and the importance of the sharied anthropology for all people

Warm regards,

Vizantrop Collective (Serbia)
