The COLLAB research team at KU Leuven is delighted to invite you to our upc=
oming symposium on 15-16 May, "Polyphony and Silence: Counter-hegemonic wri=
ting practices, migration, and multilingualism."
Polyphony and silence are concepts that refer to sonority and voice, as mul=
titude or as absence. While they may seem to be in opposition to each other=
, both can be counter-hegemonic tools for writing against monolingual and e=
thno-nationalist imaginaries =96 in political movements, in literature and =
the arts, in institutions, in media, and in everyday life. We use the conce=
pt of polyphony to highlight the political significance of maintaining diff=
erence in unity, and silence to emphasize the importance of omitting, refus=
ing, and listening.
The symposium will feature a keynote address by Shahram Khosravi, Professor=
of Anthropology at Stockholm University, a roundtable with organizations a=
nd collectives from different European cities (En Palabras, Exiled Writers Ink, The Poetr=
y Project, The Post Collective), and optional interactive workshops by Brussels-ba=
sed art collectives Klankvangers and The Post Collective.
The symposium is free and open to the public, and will take place in the Le=
uven STUK House for Dance, Image and Sound. You can find more information, =
including the program and registration link, on our website.
