PhD-Fellowship in Anthropology: A comparison of endurance walking
and running

This PhD fellowship will be embedded within the Cultural Mobilities
Research (CuMoRe) cluster of the Interculturalism, Migration and
Minorities Research Centre (IMMRC) at the Faculty of Social Sciences, in
close collaboration with the Policy in Sports & Physical Activity
Research Group at the Department of Movement Sciences at KU Leuven,
Belgium. CuMoRe conducts state-of-the-art anthropological research on
human (im)mobilities, broadly conceived.

Project

The main objective of this pioneering project is to investigate,
empirically, the increasingly popular phenomenon across Europe of
leisure-time endurance activities, particularly long-distance hiking and
running. More precisely, we want to grasp the mobile ways in which
endurance practitioners deal with their (integrated) selves and with
changing societal trends. The project is guided by a central research
question: How do leisure-time endurance hikers and runners engage in
their embodied physical activities and what does this tell us about the
wider current societal context in which these mobilities take place?

This PhD position in social and cultural anthropology is part of a
larger research collaboration with colleagues from movement sciences,
involving senior researchers and MA students. More information about the

Tasks
● Conducting empirical research, including embodied ethnographic
fieldwork, questionnaires and interviews, in Belgium and other parts of
Europe (to be determined), for a period of minimum 12 months (this can
be split up in multiple periods).
● Writing and completing a PhD dissertation within four years.
● Actively participating in the PhD Programme in Social and Cultural
Anthropology at KU Leuven.
● Collaborating with the research team in research and publications.
● Participating in conferences, workshops,seminars and other scholarly
activities.


Profile

Applications are invited from candidates with the following qualifications:

● A Master's degree, with academic distinction, in a social science
discipline (e.g. anthropology, human geography or sociology) or in
movement sciences.
● Interest in social scientific research and ability to work both
independently and in team.
● Relevant personal experience with endurance physical activities.
● A high standard of spoken and written English (required) and knowledge
of other European languages (a must).
● Strong analytical and qualitative research skills and the motivation
to pursue creative work in anthropology.
● The ability to present research results and publish them in
peer-reviewed journals.


Offer

We offer you a full-time PhD scholarship. The appointment is initially
for one year, but renewable for three years after a positive evaluation,
leading to a Doctorate in Social and Cultural Anthropology.

The fellow will receive all regular provisions for PhD fellows at KU
Leuven. In addition, s/he will be allocated office space and a laptop,
and receive funding for research activities like attending conferences
abroad and organizing workshops and conferences in Leuven or elsewhere.
